Audience feedback

Front Cover:
  • Do you think my magazine reflects my chosen genre of pop?
  • What features enable you to recognise my magazine as a magazine?
  • Do you think my language choice is suitable?
  • How could my front cover be improved?

From my audience feedback I have learnt that my magazine does reflect my chosen genre of pop, as I have a good colour scheme, lots of coverlines, a puff which is stereotypical for any type of magazine. The puff and barcode, price ,date and website allows the audience to recognise my magazine as a music magazine. My language choice is suitable as I have used abbreviations and informal language to relate to my target audience. Overall I am happy with this feedback as I have met my expectations.

Contents page:
  • Does my contents page resemble a pop magazines contents page?
  • Is my language choice suitable?
  • Do you think my pictures suitable?
  • What do you think needs to be improved on the contents page?

From my audience feedback I have learnt that I should include some more features on my contents page, the language choice is suitable as I again have used abbreviations which would appeal to my target audience of teenagers. The pictures are suitable as they can be imagined as teenage pop stars. Some of the text on my wins and offers blends in with the box, so I will make the text stand out more.

Double page spread:
  •  Describe the layout of my double page article
  • What do you think of my main image? Is it suitable?
  • Do you think my language choice is suitable?
  • What do you think could be improved on my double page spread?

The layout is good as the main image is on one side and the text on the other which is a common feature of double page spreads, as wells as three columns of text. The main image is suitable as the pose and style reflects my chosen-sub genre of pop. The langue choice which I have used is suitable. The features of the double page spread all link in well together which is what I hoped for.

Magazine development continued

Here I have started to develop my double page spread by first inserting the article that I had written previously. I have chosen to use a question and answer format as I found out that this format is frequently used in pop magazines. I have used a different colour for the questions which allows the reader to navigate around the article easier; the colour also makes the text stand out.

Here I have added a pull quote as my headline as this is a generic convention of a pop music magazine. I have also added a drop cap to attract attention to the article, the drop cap is also a generic convention of a pop magazine article.

In this screenshot I have added a main image, a small portion the image bleeds across to the next page to connote the importance of the photograph. I have to chosen to used this image as it is a stereotypical image to use; she is smiling connoting happiness. The style of clothing and pose reflects the 'pop' genre. I have also drawn a pink circle around the pull quote, the pink colour connotes femininity and reflects my house style.

Here I have added the title of the magazine in the top right hand corner of the magazine which is a generic convention of pop magazine, it also makes sure that I continue my house style throughout my pages. I have also included page numbers and a website which is there throughout my magazine pages.

I have adjusted my website and page numbers; I have made them bold so that they stand out and are coherent.

Magazine development continued

In this screenshot I have added what the magazine will include, using informal language to connect to my target audience of teen girls. I have also added a 'wins & offers' box as I have found out from my research that it is a frequent feature for pop magazines. I have used a pale pink tone to draw the circle, as the pink connotes femininity.
Here I have changed my main picture as I feel that a wider variety of camera angles were required as pop magazines include a wide range of photographs. I also thought that my previous main image would be more suitable from my double page spread.

In this screen shot I have changed the shape of the 'wins & offers' circle into a star shape, due to the fact that it now is more eye grabbing and connotes fun. A similar star shape is utilised on the contents page of We Love Pop which grabs the attention of the reader.

Further development of magazine

I have added a strip of colour at the bottom of the magazine, which brings it to life as predominantly the colours are dark and somber. The colour also connotes femininity, lipstick and candy floss as my target audience is female teenagers.

Here I have added more writing; I have used words such as 'fab' and 'celebs' in order to connote youth and relate to my target demographic of teenagers aged 15-18 years old. Further on in my designing process I will include direct motive address such as 'you' and 'you'll', as this will enable me to connect to my target audience.

I have also produced a barcode using 'www.dafont.co.uk' as any type of magazine features a barcode which is one of the main features.

Here I have began to develop my contents page; I have used fonts which I think are appropriate and connotes a current style and youth. I have also written the masthead in the top left corner of the contents page, this will produce a brand identity for my magazine.

I have also started to include some photograph which I have taken in my own time. Further on in my development I will incorporate a variety of images to compose a professional and visual magazine, as I have learned from my research that pop magazines have a wide variety of images.

I have added more pictures that connote fun and youth, I have added the headline of my magazine in the top left corner of the contents page.

I have rearranged the picture to produce a more professional aesthetic to my consents page. In addition I have started to add some page numbers in the 'inside this month' box.

Developing front cover

Here I have taken various screenshots of my progression of designing my magazine front cover: These numerous screen shots depict how I have improved my front cover by using similar features to the various pop magazines that I have researched. For example: they all have had striking and eye catching main images, Puff, a eye grabbing splash and coverline.

In the screenshot above is when I began designing my magazine starting the front cover and the font styles. I so far have shown three types of fonts, I will use more when I further develop my magazine, as from my research a typical pop magazine features at least five different fonts which connote fun, youth.
Here I have added a central image to my front cover, as I feel that it is appropriate to my chosen sub-genre. This photograph is quite striking and connotes dominance and power which relates to my research, as the central images for the front covers were dominating and striking; due to that the central image will grab the audiences attention which will make them want to buy the magazine.

Here I had included a puff which is a typical feature for any pop magazine.

In this screenshot I have added a splash, which again is a typical feature of a pop magazine. I have not yet included much writing but when I will add more writing I will use typically slang, as this will connote youth and will allow me to connect with my target audience.
Here I have used photoshop to edit my main picture which will feature on my contents page. I have created a pinhole effect, which makes this photograph seem more professional. I will use this image as my main image for my contents page, as this picture connotes happiness this will make the reader intrigued and read the main article.

Photo-shoot

This picture I have taken whilst being at a concert, I though this picture would be suitable for my magazine as it will enable by magazine to have a wider vertiey of settings. Also for my research I have found out that a picture taken from a concert is usually used. In addition I feel that this photograph connotes fun which is due to the hands in the air.

In this photograph I have tried to capture the "boy band" vibe which would appeal to my target audience of teenage girls. I have used a long shot for this picture to show the full body image and background. This photograph also connotes fun as they are smiling, this is a stereotypical element in pop magazines as boy bands are portrayed as happy and fun.

I will use this photograph as the pop magazines front cover as it is a strking image that would grab the readers attention. Furthermore the white background and pinhole effect create a professional aesthetic. I have chosen to use a close up shot to allow the reader to focus on the face.

I have taken a group photo which connotes youth and fun, I have used a medium long shot to produce a wider variety of images for the magazine; as I have found out from my research that a wide range of shot types have been used to keep the reader inserted.
Here I have used a long shot to show the full body image which is a frequent element in pop music magazines to show the artist's style.

This is quite a stereotypical image which connotes happiness

Masthead Ideas

I used a website called 'www.dafont.co.uk' to inquire various fonts that I could use for my magazine. I recommend this website as it has a wide variety of fonts which cover a mass audience.

I have decided to used my third font style, as I have learnt from my peer feedback that my option is the most suitable for my chosen sub-genre (pop). I also think that it is the most suitable as it emits the 'pop' vibe, which connotes youth and  urbanity. From my research I have found out that pop magazines used bold, stylish and eye catching fonts.

Mock-up contents page

Mock-up front cover

Here is a mock-up of my magazines front cover to make my front cover reflect my chosen sub genre I have researched different pop magazine front covers, I have then used a similar layout with similar features like a puff and website name .

Mock-up double page spread

Photo-shoot ideas

Possible people that I will use for my photo-shoot:

Hannah:
As she is 16 so she is within my target audience range. She also likes pop which means her style can relate back to my chosen sub-genre

Eleanor:
She is 17 and fits within my target audience range, and has a similar fashion sense with people who are in the pop industry.

Emily:
Aged 16 so she fits in with my target audience range, she is also studying media which means she will understand the importance of this photo-shoot.

Jim & Ollie:
Jim 17 (left) and Ollie 16 (right) who are within my target audience range, it will also be useful to have a mixture of males and females in the magazine.

Location ideas for photo shoot

From my research  I have found out that many different locations are used for photo shoots, for example; an outside space (rural or urban) , on stage at a concert, backstage or on a plain background which produces a more professional and clean-cut image.
Here are some of the locations that I have considered using:

  • Indoor space- possibly white background to give a more professional clean cup image
  • Outdoor space- Rural such as a woodland, or urban area such as a town this will provide a wider variety of images for the reader and make it more interesting. For example:
